Gas Connect Austria operates the infrastructure that acts as the central hub in the European natural gas grid. Compressor stations along the pipelines ensure constant flow of gas by cleaning, measuring and compressing it. In the eight compressor stations all over Austria the informational animation by Strukt informs about this process. An interactive version is available on the website of Gas Connect Austria. The print version is used in information brochures.

Strukt created a clean visual language to communicate the complex process:

Strukt is responsible for the corporate identity of the festival. This task incoporates the creation of a logo, a design and layout guideline, and a trailer to announce the festival.

The trailer, created under the direction of Michael Seiser, is a mix of video footage (shot with a Canon 7D) and animated typographic elements. It contrasts the analog real world with virtual digital elements, which finally form the NODE logo.

NODE10 is organised by Node e.V. in cooperation with the Frankfurter Kunstverein and the vvvv group, notably David Brüll, Ingolf Heinsch and Strukt’s Thomas Hitthaler.

With the trailer Unit F celebrated its 10th anniversary and the 30 winners of the Austria Fashion Award from 2000-2009 and introduces the 2010 awards at Semper Depot Vienna. Strukt was also responsible for the live visuals, curated by sound:frame festival, and the projections of the nominee videos and winners during the show.

In a tight production schedule of only 6 days a stage was built in our studio, where our animators could set up and film various objects on spinning mirror stages. With two projectors the content, videos, text and live generated images from vvvv were projected onto the objects.

‘Lightrails’ is a light sculpture with the intention to re-define and re-interpret the exhibition room. An easy but effective mapping technique was used to create seamless projections on both sides of the object. Light-beams were triggered by the visitors and ran through the room, following the surface created by the sculpture. Each ‘reflection’ of the light-beam was accompanied by sound. The speed and brightness of the beam was directly influenced by the force the visitors used when triggering the beam stepping on pedals on the floor. This also influenced the volume of the sound-effects. The audio signal was played back on a surround sound system that allowed a spatial positioning of the sounds and created a truly immersive experience.

The sound-design was courtesy of Digitalofen Audiobakery, which also created the ambient sounds that were pervasive through the room. As usual, we used our favorite real-time multipurpose toolkit to create the installation. The projectors were provided by concept solutions. The construction of the sculpture was kindly supported by INDAT and the whole project was hosted by the sound:frame festival and financed by departure.

Strukt lässt es im Wiener MuseumsQuartier schneien! Im Auftrag der Österreich Werbung (Agentur: TBWA) rieseln in diesem Advent selbstgebastelte Schneeflocken über die Fassaden des MUMOKs, Leopold Museums und des MuseumsQuartiers.

Auf der Website schneeflocke.austria.info kann man der eigenen Kreativität freien Lauf lassen und eine individuelle Schneeflocke basteln. Per Email wird der genaue Zeitpunkt bekanntgegeben, wann die Flocke im MuseumsQuartier projiziert wird. Eine Videoaufnahme der Projektion seiner persönlichen Schneeflocke hält dieses Erlebnis fest. Dabei ist Strukt für die Programmierung der Website bis zur Realisation der Projektionen zuständig.

Bisher wurden mit viel Sorgfalt von den fleißigen Usern über 16.000 wunderschöne Schneeflocken kreiert.

Wir sind soeben aus Japan zurückgekommen, wo wir auf der 100% design Tokio für die mediale Bespielung des österreichischen Messestands verantwortlich waren. Unter der Leitung von Juland wurden die Werke der bekanntesten Designer Österreichs ausgestellt. Die Visuals an den Abendveranstaltungen in Tokios besten Clubs stammten auch aus unserer Feder. Getreu dem Thema der Ausstellung Spot On Wien rückten wir mit unserem Einsatz in Japan die Wiener Designszene ins gute Licht.

Tourismuskonferenz Wien

Die Agentur Jung von Matt/Donau hat uns beauftragt, um die Präsentation des neuen Markenauftritts von WienTourismus im Rahmen der Wiener Tourismuskonferenz mitzugestalten. Das Ergebnis unserer Arbeit war eine Multi-Screen Präsentation auf der Hauptbühne und ein Projektionswürfel, der im Foyer des Veranstaltungsortes, des Wiener Semper Depots, durch den Tag geführt und für die Abschlussfeier eine auffällige Präsentationsfläche für die neuen Kampagnensujets dargestellt hat. Zum Ausklang verwandelte sich der Projektionskörper in einen Disco-Würfel, der von uns vor Ort mit Live-Inhalten bespielt wurde.

Medienmesse Wien

Für die Wiener Medienmesse hat uns die Stadt Wien, das ZiT und blizznet beauftragt, eine Multi-User Präsentationsform für unseren Struktable zu entwickeln. Das Ergebnis nennen wir “Media Tree Application”, eine Multi-Touch und Multi-User Software, die eine große Menge an multimedialen Inhalten gleichzeitig übersichtlich darstellen kann. Die kompakte Verzeichnisstruktur und eine physikalische Verdrängung der einzelnen Objekte ermöglicht mehreren Benutzern gleichzeitig und ungestört durch Texte, Bilder und Videos zu navigieren. Dieses Projekt wurde in Zusammenarbeit mit ZONE Media GmbH realisiert, die für die Redaktion und die grafische Aufbereitung der Inhalte verantwortlich war.

Digital Wallpaper fuer Hirzberger Events

Neben Motion Design haben wir auch auf unserem zweiten Spezialgebiet – der interaktiven Installationen – soeben einige Projekte realisiert. Wir durften die Büroräume des Eventbüros Hirzberger in der Wiedner Hauptstraße in Wien mit Projektionen gestalten. Unserem Konzept lag die Idee zugrunde, die horizontalen Streifen der Wände neu zu interpretieren. Mit Hilfe eines eigens entwickelten Systems können wir mit zwei Beamern verzerrungsfrei auf beliebige Oberflächen projizieren. Dieses „Digital Wallpaper“ ziert nun jede Nacht automatisch die Räume im Erdgeschoß.

Media Universe

Unser preisgekröntes “Media Universe” setzt tausende Elemente (Buchstaben oder andere Zeichen) mosaikartig und in Echtzeit zu Motiven und Schriftzügen zusammen. Es ist somit perfekt für Bühnenpräsentationen jeder Art geeignet und wurde beim CCA Award 2009 für den Einsatz beim Mercedes Benz design:project mit einer Venus International geehrt.

From October 30th to November 3rd Strukt will be on location in Tokyo, designing the interactive digital wallpaper at the exhibtion, as well as creating the club visuals in two locations, the Superdeluxe and the Club Velour. The documentation of the project will be featured on this page in November.

Opening titles and end credits

Strukt was invited to design and animate the opening titles featuring the Spot On Wien Logo, which are used for all documentaries and interviews. Built around the black shape of the Spot On Wien Logo, which depicts two lightning flashes, Strukt constructed an abstract and dense world of photographic equipment based on the key visual given by Juland.

On-location work

For the duration of the “100% design tokyo” fair Strukt members were on-location in Tokyo to do live-visual performances for the fairs’s opening day, a fashion show showcasing Austrian designers at Le Velours and a dance-performance night at Superdeluxe Club.

The opening titles were presented at the press conference in Vienna on September 16th 2009.





Strukt was on location to manage the projection installations for the Spot On Wien booth at 100% Design Tokyo.

At Verlours Club Strukt was responsible for the visuals that accompanied a fashion show and a live performance by Ogris Debris.

For the “Night of Dance” a 4-projector setup was used for room-filling graphical visuals to support music acts like Elektro Guzzi, Dorian Concept, Bnckd and more.

Later on during the night Strukt’s multi-touch club visual set-up once again lit up the venue with mood setting projections.

The visuals were projected onto a cylinder and the wall using 12 projectors.

Live content and realtime data was featured in the visuals, e.g. number of banner clicks, eaten hamburgers or born babies since the beginning of the event.

The design concept developed by Tanja Tomic of Strukt combined live cut-out-animation with realtime drawing on the Tagtool. Therefore, the visuals could be designed to fit the overall visual identity of the tour, while opening up endless possibilities for spontaneous creativity inspired by the music. The animators designed landscapes or abstract backgrounds with paper cut-outs live in front of a camera, while the artists on the Tagtool used these elements to tell small stories and create and animate characters.

This technique allowed for diverse styles and millions of possibilities in live storytelling.

The Media Globe is a visual installation featuring a globe and six projectors, showing a fully, seamless and warpfree image. With a diameter of four meters, the Media Globe is an impressive presentation tool and light installation.

Thanks to a unique projection-system it is now possible to completely fill a sphere with moving images and interactive content. This technique opens up new possibilities to display information. Videos, images, text, panorama photos, spherical textures, interactive content and much more can be presented in a new stunning way. The Media Globe is based on an idea by Hans Reitz and was initially developed by MESO Digital Interiors and Strukt’s
technical director Thomas Hitthaler.

This 3D-visualization shows the configuration of the Media Globe, and how it can be combined with an architectural projection using the same realtime distortion techniques.

A multifunctional computersystem running software especially programmed for this installation allows the use of any kind of content. It can be a simple playback of images and videos or a complex realtime visualization of database driven information. The possibilities of what to show are sheer endless.

Showing this installation at product presentation, trade fairs or other events guarantees an extraordinary experience: an impressive, bright sphere with a seamless image all over it, floating in mid-air.

As an art piece the Media Globe can reflect various aspects of its surroundings. The visual shown on the globe can be effected by sound, light, movements of people or any other interaction that one can think of. This makes the installation a lively piece of art, which will attract people’s attention.

The Tagtool encourages spontaneous creativity by painting with light. A stage or entire buildings are brought to life with interactive drawings. No matter if curated artists or the audience itself is using the Tagtool, the output is bright, colorful and last but not least – fun.

The Tagtool is an award-winning instrument for live performance drawing and animation, developed by Office for Media and Arts International. Strukt exclusively provides the Tagtool device and Tagtool artists for commercial purposes, be it a product presentation, corporate event, conference, trade fair or outdoor architectural projections. It is an interactive communication tool so intuitively that literally everybody finds an individual way to perform with the Tagtool.

In 2008, Tagtool won the Österreichischen Staatspreis 2008 in the category Förderpreis, the Mercur Price in the category Creativity and the Europrix Multimedia in the category Interactive Computer Graphics.

Artist Performances
A very popular application of the Tagtool is the work with experienced Tagtool artists. They are very avid with the Tagtool’s drawing and animation possibilities and they bring their expertise and artistic skills to any surface a projector can reach – no matter if it is outdoors on buildings or indoor using screens or projecting on stages.

Open Sessions

During open sessions the audience is invited to participate in Tagtool performances. A so-called Tagtool operator will assist all people new to the Tagtool and show them how easy it is to just have fun painting with light.

 
Do-It Yourself Workshops
As amazing the Tagtool is, it is actually fairly easy to reproduce. Since the Tagtool’s schematics and software are released under open source rights, for some people it’s equally fascinating to build their own Tagtools as it is to use them once the successfully assembled all parts and pieces. Experienced members of the Tagtool community are available to guide through the important steps.

 
Tagtool at events

The Tagtool can be implemented as a creative and interactive highlight of various kind of events. So far it was used to enhance stage performances of musicians and theater plays, to bring a new twist to product presentations, to involve the audience in a creative process and to bring unexpected joy to unexpected Tagtool users such as high-level managers, politicians and self-declared “un-creative” people.

Tagtool Set-Up

Using a Tagtool on location really only requires a powersource, the tagtool and a projector. Technically the Tagtool is capable to span the output to a maximum of 3 HD-resolution projectors. Please not since you are dealing with a projection set-up the light situation has to be either controllable or quite dark by nature.

Here you see the schematic view of a Tagtool set-up.

Strukt was asked to design the key visual and the information catalogue for the “Waldzell Meeting 2008″, which was inspired by this year’s theme of “The time is now.” The visual was also applied on the very own “Waldzell-Beer”. We feel very honored that we got the chance to support this event, which provides ideas to make our world a better place.

At the EnBW SmartFactory visitors of the Hannover Messe were informed about energy saving potentials in factories. With an interactive terminal the users could access various interviews and animations, which were shown on a 3-screen video wall.

The project was realised using Adobe Flash for the interface and vvvv for video playback, using several networked computers. Strukt also worked on the continuous video installation on five plasma screens around the SmartFactory.

By selecting an item on the touchscreen the visitor could access various interviews.

NODE08 is dedicated to digital arts and implies an exhibition and a lecture day with talks of Herbert W. Franke (computer graphics pioneer), Casey Reas (developer of Processing), Paul Prudence (creator of dataisnature.com, computational artist), Régine Debatty (creator of we-make-money-not-art.com) plus many more, and an impressive amount of workshops (with focus on vvvv).

Strukt realised the event design including the logo, key visual and motion design, and was involved in the organisation of the event. The print materials were created by Sebastian Huber. The organisation commitee consisted of David Brüll, Patrick Raddatz, Eno Henze, Alexander Graf, Sebastian Huber and Thomas Hitthaler (Strukt).

The key visual of the event was used for print, motion and web design, e.g. for the posters above.

The workshops were held by vvvv-experienced users and professionals.

The 3D-animation in the closing film consists of up-to-date photographs from the event and a dynamic swarm of all 1100 participants, who were photographed during the conference. All portraits finally build the motto of the conference: “360°”.

The opening film for the corporate conference adresses the main topics of the conference. This montage shows a shorter version of the opening film.

Strukt was commissioned by circ corporate experience to develop the event design and a part of the motion design.

Together with circ, Strukt coordinated visual designs and worked closely with interior designers to create a consistent experience throughout the conference and dinner party.

The projections on stage were fitted into the architecture of the venue, a former railway station in Berlin. All 2D- and 3D-animations for the evening party were produced by Strukt in-house. The visitors were taken on a journey looking through the virtual windows in the arches of the hall.

The party included an opera performance, contemporary dance and a performance by a young beat box artist.

Strukt was commisioned to create 6 TV-Commercials for IAA, Europe’s biggest auto show, by Berlin based agency Zum goldenen Hirschen. Strukt provided motion design based on an already established layout and supervised the green screen shoot at Havel Studios, Berlin.

All spots were completed within 14 days. The commercials aired on German TV-Stations such as ARD, ZDF, Premiere, Sat.1 or RTL and in several arenas of the German soccer “Bundesliga”.

The agency Zum goldenen Hirschen made use of Strukt’s Rent-the-team option.

As students of Stefan Sagmeister at the University of Applied Sciences Salzburg, Philipp Steinweber of kon.txt and Strukt’s Andreas Koller worked on the topic “Is it possible to touch someone’s heart with design?”. Together they created an information graphic visualizing the text in the Holy Books of the five world religions.

In june 2007 the original 7×3-meter (23×10-foot) artwork was exhibited for the first time at Hangar-7 in Salzburg, Austria. It is also shown at the c.stem festival in Milan, Italy, and on the Processing.org online exhibition, on visualcomplexity.com and infosthetics.com. “Similar Diversity” was mentioned in EYE magazine #64 and PAGE magazine 12/2007.

Additional to the 30-second intro animation, which features a mix of athletes and graphic elements in a 3D-collage, Strukt created several bumpers for the various sections of the DVD, one styleguide for animated photo collages, and the DVD cover.

Strukt was asked to design the whole evening’s projections inside the club, working with two visual designers, one director of photography and two Tagtool-Artists creating content for five projectors and a three-projector wide screen behind the DJs.

The visual concept was to provide a diversity of styles with an interactive participation of the crowd. We installed a Tagtool for an open-to-public session in the center of the room, where everybody could join and be part of the projections. These were mixed with generative content, programmed to be reactive to the sound. For the DJ set of Markus Kavka two Tagtool-Artists worked out visual stories, combined with cut-out-animation and video clips. A third part involved more classical visual techniques like video loops and live video from cameras in the crowd.

Two days after the event the over 5-minute long video documentation for in-store presentations was finished.

The presentation of the new soccer ball was realised with a fully projected sphere (by Strukt’s technical director Thomas Hitthaler, produced by Meso Digital Interiors) with a diameter of 4 meters.

This project was presented at the TNT Jackson concert at ARGE Kultur Salzburg on March 3rd 2007. It was a non-profit project. The Tagtool is an interactive digital drawing tool by our partners Office for Media and Arts International that explores new ways of expressions and visualization. It is closely related to graffiti, street-art and illustration, and unifies these art forms in a new way.

Strukt created a live visual performance with combination of different design styles and techniques for TNT Jackson on stage.

After the TNT Jackson concert we worked with generative graphics and sound-reactive particle systems to visualize the DJ set of Michael Fakesch (who used to be one half of Funkstörung).[/lang_en][lang_de]Mit analogen und digitalen Medien gestaltete Strukt eine interaktive visuelle Installation für die Bühnengestaltung von TNT Jackson. We worked with audio-visual installations, generative content and pre-produced video loops. In 2005 at Arena Vienna we worked with projectors and a TV wall built out of 20 individual monitors. In 2006 we additionally hosted an open-to-public Tagtool session. The Red Bull Brandwagen BBQ parties were organised by dvsn.at.

These annual parties celebrated the journeys of the Brandwagen, a decked out Mercedes bus, that is available for young and upcoming bands for their tours.

Five hours of live tagging and drawing

We invited writer AKIM from “Jazzstylecorner Berlin” to draw the visuals with the Tagtool. The stage was built completely out of several bigger and smaller white cubes to have a large and lively space for projections. We also worked with pre-produced video loops for the Red Bull Music Academy session that took place before Kool Keith’s show.

The work of Andreas Koller included film intros, logo animations, screen design and background animations for international DVD, UMD and BluRay titles. Above: Blade Trinity UMD intro animation for Metropolitain, EIV and Village Roadshow.

Andreas Koller’s reel from work up to June 2007 contains most of these animations for Sony DVD Center Europe, but also other commercial and personal projects.

Additional to motion design Strukt’s activities at the festival itself included organising a conference on VJing tools and generative graphics. Both the trailer design and the conference organisation were non-profit projects.

The trailer extends the corporate design of the Schmiede into 3d-space, where the big amboss is constructed from abstract elements. Additional typographical animations inform about the artists participating at the workshops.
